The Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry service is expected to be expanded nationwide by the end of August, according to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Speaking at the weekly press conference, the President said the government is continuing the rollout of the service in line with its planned schedule, describing RTL as a key priority in improving national connectivity across the Maldives.
The RTL network, launched in 2022, currently operates in 15 atolls and connects 145 islands. The most recent expansion introduced services in Laamu Atoll last month.
The President said only a small number of atolls remain without coverage, including Meemu Atoll and Zone 3, which covers Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaal and Vaavu atolls. He acknowledged that delays in payments to contractors had affected the pace of implementation.
He said that if payments had been made on time, the rollout would have been completed earlier, adding that the government now expects full coverage of the remaining atolls by July or August at the latest. He also noted that work is underway to acquire additional vessels for atolls where services have already begun.
The government has stated that the nationwide expansion of RTL is aimed at strengthening inter-island transport links, improving accessibility, and supporting economic activity across the country.
