The Teachers Association of Maldives (TAM) has called on relevant sports bodies to organise interschool tournaments independently of schools, citing the significant burden placed on teachers.

In a statement shared on X, TAM said teachers make considerable sacrifices to facilitate school sports activities. The association noted that educators are actively involved throughout the process — from supervising practices and being on duty during matches to accompanying students to training sessions and tournaments.

According to TAM, preparations for such tournaments often begin months in advance, with teachers playing a central role in organising and managing these efforts alongside their regular responsibilities.

The association emphasised that if the time and effort spent on tournament preparations were redirected toward teaching, it would result in substantial educational benefits for students.

TAM has therefore urged sports associations to take responsibility for organising tournaments outside the school system.
