The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a public advisory warning of anticipated severe weather conditions across the Maldives from the coming five days.

According to the National Meteorological Service, a low-level atmospheric circulation has developed southeast of the Maldives, leading to strengthened average winds across the region. The system is expected to bring squally showers, particularly affecting the southern and central atolls from today until Tuesday.

Authorities have urged mariners and the general public to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to minimize risks associated with the adverse weather.

The NDMA warned of potential flooding due to heavy rainfall and advised residents in vulnerable areas to use sandbags or similar barriers to prevent water from entering homes. Households are also encouraged to relocate essential items such as food supplies and electrical appliances to higher ground to avoid damage.

With strong winds forecast, the authority advised securing roofs using ropes or other materials where necessary, and fastening or storing loose outdoor items that could be displaced.

To reduce electrical hazards, residents are urged to switch off and unplug appliances when not in use.

Individuals planning sea travel have been advised to obtain updated weather information from relevant authorities before departure and ensure that adequate safety and communication measures are in place.

The NDMA further recommended that households prepare in advance by stocking essential supplies, as disruptions caused by severe weather may impact access to goods.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have called on the public to remain vigilant and follow official guidance.
