Abdullah Sodiq, who won the South Hithadhoo constituency by-election, was sworn in as a member of the parliament at a special ceremony held today.

The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Judge Hussain Shaheed. Following the ceremony, Sodiq signed the oath declaration, formally assuming his seat in parliament.

The South Hithadhoo seat became vacant after a court ruling determined that former MP Ahmed Sinan had a proven debt. A by-election was subsequently held on 6 June, in which Sodiq secured victory with 1,375 votes.

Sodiq represents the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). His election increases the party’s representation in the 20th parliament from 12 to 13 seats.

Before entering parliament, Sodiq served as the first Mayor of Addu City and held the position for three terms. He also previously served as a State Minister at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.

The 20th parliament consists of 93 members. The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) holds 74 seats, while the MDP now holds 13. The remaining seats are held by the Maldives Development Alliance, the Jumhooree Party, the Maldives National Party, and two independent members.
