The People’s National Congress (PNC) has announced that it will hold its Mathee Majlis between 15 and 18 September 2026, with internal elections scheduled for 11 July 2026.

PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla confirmed that the party has appointed a 13-member standing committee to oversee the organisation of the congress and related electoral processes.

He stated that the Mathee Majlis preparation process includes elections for constituency presidents, youth and women’s sector leadership, as well as standing committee members across the party structure.

Nominations Open for Internal Posts

The party has opened applications for internal leadership positions, with nominations accepted from today until 30 June at 6:00 pm. Applications will be submitted through a dedicated portal launched by the party.

Only members registered with the party as of today are eligible to contest the positions or participate in the voting process.

A preliminary voters’ list will be published on 1 July, after which members will have three days to submit complaints or corrections. The final voters’ list will be released on 4 July.

Electoral Structure and Eligibility Rules

The party confirmed that constituency presidents will be elected in areas where the People’s Majlis does not have sitting PNC members.

“We will elect constituency presidents only for those constituencies that do not have People’s Majlis members representing the Congress Party. For constituencies where People’s Majlis members are present, the constituency presidents shall be the individuals representing the PNC in the People’s Majlis.

However, the party also retains the authority to remove constituency leadership roles if members are found to be acting against internal rules or in a manner considered harmful to the party.

Changes in Constituency Leadership

Abdul Raheem confirmed that the Dhiggaru constituency presidency within the party has been declared vacant following the removal of MP Ahmed Nazim from the position. He cited a lack of confidence in his role as constituency president and refused to disclose further details. However, Nazim remains a registered member of the party, with no decision taken regarding his party membership status.

Nazim previously stepped down as Deputy Speaker of Parliament in May, stating that his resignation was made in the interest of protecting parliamentary dignity and independence, while rejecting allegations raised against him.

Nationwide Internal Elections Planned

The internal elections will cover all islands across the Maldives. The 93-member People’s Majlis currently includes 74 members from PNC. However, following the removal of Ahmed Nazim from his constituency presidency within the party’s Mathee Majlis, 20 constituency president positions will be contested in this cycle.

In addition, steering committees will be formed at island level. Islands with populations below 3,000 will have seven-member committees, while those above 3,000 will elect nine-member committees. These committees will include additional elected members alongside existing representatives such as council members and women’s development committee members.

The party confirmed that chairperson positions are not subject to election under this process.
