Passport services were officially launched in B. Dharavandhoo yesterday, expanding access to immigration services for residents of Baa Atoll.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Acting Head of Maldives Immigration and Chief Principal Immigration Officer Ahmed Waheed, along with Dharavandhoo Council President Ali Sameeh, council members, senior immigration officials and residents of the island.
Maldives Immigration said the introduction of passport services in Dharavandhoo will provide greater convenience for residents of the atoll. Individuals applying for passports through the Imuga portal can now choose to collect their passports from either Dharavandhoo or Eydhafushi.
The expansion forms part of ongoing efforts to decentralise passport services and improve access to government services across the country.
Passport services were previously introduced in Eydhafushi on 12 August last year as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to expand passport services to islands across the Maldives.
The launch in Dharavandhoo is expected to reduce travel requirements for residents seeking passport-related services and further strengthen the availability of immigration services in the atolls.
