President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for stronger collective action to address drug abuse and illicit trafficking, describing the issue as a social, economic, moral, and national security challenge that affects the very fabric of society.
In a message issued yesterday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President said the Maldives joins the global community in observing this year’s theme, “World drug problem: persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses.” He stressed that tackling the issue is essential to safeguarding the country’s future and protecting its youth.
President Muizzu highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to expand treatment and rehabilitation services, noting that three new full-service rehabilitation centres are scheduled to open later this year.
He also said recent legislative reforms have strengthened the country’s response to drug-related crimes by improving inter-agency coordination, clarifying legal procedures, and introducing measures to disrupt trafficking networks and hold offenders accountable.
The President reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to working with regional and international partners to address emerging drug-related threats, including new psychoactive substances and evolving trafficking methods.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu called on families, communities, civil society organisations, and the private sector to work together towards building a drug-free Maldives. He said understanding, compassion, and opportunity can help empower individuals to make healthy choices and contribute to a stronger and more resilient nation.
