The regulation on collecting information required to determine the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released in the Maldives has been formulated and published in the Government Gazette.
The regulation came into effect on Thursday, the day it was published, and will be implemented by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
It has been issued under the authority granted by Section 25(a), with reference to Section 22 of Law No. 9/2021 (Climate Emergency Act). The framework establishes administrative procedures for measuring, registering, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions in the Maldives.
According to the ministry, the regulation defines the stages and mechanisms for collecting and sharing information between institutions involved in measuring, managing, transporting, and verifying emissions. It also sets out administrative arrangements to support the updating of data required to assess the country’s greenhouse gas profile and prepare reports under international climate agreements.
Under the regulation, data collection will be carried out by designated stakeholders, including the Utility Regulatory Authority, utility service providers, Maldives Customs Service, industrial and manufacturing operators, refrigeration and air conditioning service providers, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Environmental Protection Agency, airport operators, and sea, land, and air transport service providers.
Energy importers, producers, and service providers are also included among the entities responsible for providing relevant emissions-related information.
