Maldives Added to List of Countries Eligible for Indian Fuel Duty Concessions
India waives petroleum export duties for neighbouring countries
India has waived export duties on petroleum products for certain neighbouring countries, including the Maldives, following an amendment published in the Gazette of India.
The duty exemption applies to the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) and the Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC), with the Maldives added to the list of countries eligible for the concessions alongside Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The amendment to India’s duty law expands access to lower-cost petroleum exports for selected regional partners.
The move comes amid disruptions to global trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which have affected energy markets and supply chains.
The Maldives, which typically imports most of its petroleum products from Oman, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, has in recent times discussed the possibility of increasing fuel imports from India amid ongoing global supply uncertainties.
The Maldivian government has not yet issued an official statement on the duty concession.
