Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has concluded an inspection visit to Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preserving the island’s historic monuments and cultural heritage.

During the visit, Heena inspected historical sites in Utheemu, Thakandhoo and Baarah to assess ongoing conservation work and preparations for this year’s National Day celebrations.

The minister also met with the Baarah Council to review the progress of several heritage preservation projects on the island.

Heena said the government aims to work closely with the council and the local community to establish a sustainable management system for Baarah’s historic monuments, including the island’s historic mosque and other culturally significant sites.

Several heritage-related development projects are currently underway, including the cleaning and upgrading of Kamanaa Magu, the restoration of the historic Kalhuoffumi area and the development of Vaaruge. The minister said work is progressing with the aim of completing the projects before National Day later this year.

As part of the visit, Heena toured a number of archaeological and historical sites, including Olhufathi Koaru, where the historic Kalhuoffumi was once kept, and the site marked by the three Berebedhi trees that were traditionally used to secure the boat. She also visited the island’s mangroves, the historic Friday Mosque and other heritage sites, highlighting the importance of integrating cultural preservation with the island’s wider development plans.
