The Maldives Police Service has urged the public not to park vehicles on pavements in Hulhumalé, following an increase in illegal parking that is obstructing pedestrian walkways.
Police said a large number of vehicles have been parked on pavements along both sides of roads across Hulhumalé, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and other road users. The illegal parking has also affected the smooth movement of public transport.
The Police stated that enforcement action is being taken against those violating the regulations, with illegally parked vehicles currently being towed from the affected areas.
The Maldives Police Service reminded the public that Article 55 of the Land Transport Act prohibits driving or parking any type of vehicle on pavements or in areas designated for pedestrians.
Under the law, the only exceptions are baby strollers and manually operated wheelchairs used by persons with disabilities. Police urged motorists to comply with the regulations and avoid parking in pedestrian areas to ensure public safety and accessibility.
