Authorities Advise Against Non-Essential Sea Travel Amid Bad Weather

Authorities have advised the public to avoid non-essential sea travel as adverse weather conditions continue across the Maldives.

The advisory follows forecasts by the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), which has predicted heavy rain and thundershowers in parts of the country. Weather conditions are expected to vary throughout the day, with moderate to moderately calm seas in the afternoon and wave heights ranging between two and five feet. Scattered rainfall is also forecast across the country.

Police have urged travellers to exercise caution when undertaking sea journeys and advised them to monitor weather updates and follow official warnings. The public has also been advised to avoid sea travel unless absolutely necessary and to wear life jackets while travelling.

Vessel operators have been reminded to comply with safety regulations, including adhering to passenger and cargo limits.

The advisory comes during the first-term school holidays, with schools scheduled to reopen next Sunday. Authorities expect increased travel during the period as families return from holiday destinations.
