Coast Guard Ship Imaduddin to Strengthen Maritime Security, Says Defence Chief

Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy has said the newly commissioned Coast Guard Ship Imaduddin will demonstrate the capability and prestige of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) at sea while strengthening the country’s maritime security.

He made the remarks at the commissioning ceremony of the vessel, which was donated by the Australian Government under the Australian Defence Cooperation Programme.

Major General Hilmy said the evolving regional security environment requires stronger national and international efforts to safeguard the Maldives’ sovereignty and national interests. He noted that the Coast Guard plays a vital role in law enforcement, maritime safety and security within Maldivian waters.

He said the new vessel will enhance the MNDF’s capacity to respond to maritime threats and challenges and will also represent the Maldives during international visits and maritime engagements.

Hilmy added that the government is continuing efforts to strengthen national defence capabilities across land, sea and air. He highlighted the acquisition of a modern Turkish naval vessel and the establishment of a specialised boat squadron for underwater and maritime operations as part of these efforts. He also said work is underway to provide V-interceptor craft for coastal security before this year’s Victory Day.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu commissioned the vessel during a ceremony held at the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hulhumalé Port. The ship was built by Austal Limited at the Henderson Shipyard in Perth, Australia.

Before the vessel’s arrival in the Maldives, MNDF Coast Guard personnel completed specialised training and familiarisation exercises in Australia to prepare for its operation.
