Maldives to Host 15th Regional Meeting of Anaesthesiologists in Ukulhas

The Maldives will host the 15th regional meeting of SAARC anaesthesiologists in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll, for the first time, bringing together more than 200 delegates from the Maldives and abroad.
Organised by the Maldivian Society of Anesthesiologists with support from the Ministry of Health and hospitals, the two-day meeting will take place from August 15 to 16.

The meeting aims to bring regional and international experts together to exchange knowledge on developments in anaesthesiology and strengthen professional ties, according to the Maldivian Society of Anaesthesiologists.
More than 200 delegates, including Maldivian professionals working in the field, have registered for the meeting. Prominent regional and international specialists are also expected to deliver keynote speeches.
Speaking to the state media, Director General of Health Services Dr Ahmed Ashraf said hosting the meeting in the Maldives could help advance anaesthesiology locally and create opportunities to expand education and training in the field.

Dr Assaad Mohamed Shaheed, a consultant anaesthesiologist and pain specialist at IGM Hospital, said the Maldives had previously been unable to host the meeting due to the small number of Maldivian anaesthesiologists.
He said the country now has 11 Maldivian doctors working in anaesthesiology, compared with only one Maldivian doctor in the field during the 1980s.
Ahead of the conference, technical experts attending the meeting will conduct specialised workshops for Maldivian doctors at four hospitals in the Malé area. A total of 120 doctors have registered for the workshops.

The Health Ministry said the conference and workshops will strengthen technical capacity in anaesthesiology and contribute to the development of the healthcare sector.
