Dry Dock to Be Established in Maldives to Service Large Vessels Locally

The government has approved plans to develop a dry dock facility in the Maldives capable of servicing large vessels locally, reducing the need to send them overseas for repairs.
Speaking to PSM News, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director Ahmed Saudy said the land required for the facility is expected to be allocated this month, after which physical work will begin. Saudy said the facility would reduce the company’s foreign currency expenditure by allowing internationally registered and classed vessels to undergo scheduled maintenance in the Maldives instead of being sent overseas.

MTCC currently carries out vessel repair work in Thilafushi, but Saudy said limited space there restricts the company’s ability to make major investments in vessel servicing infrastructure.
He said the new dry dock is being developed under a plan agreed between MTCC and the government and is expected to create additional revenue streams and business opportunities for the company.
The wider plan also includes the establishment of a transshipment port and a bunkering facility, which Saudy said would complement the dry docking operation and strengthen MTCC’s overall services.
Saudy said the dry dock is intended to increase MTCC’s revenue while reducing the foreign currency costs associated with sending its vessels abroad for maintenance.
