Rasmalé Land Reclamation Reaches 62 Per Cent as 716 Hectares Reclaimed
Land reclamation for the Rasmalé development project has reached 62 per cent completion, with 716 hectares reclaimed out of the planned total of 1,150 hectares.
According to the Deputy Minister of Housing Ministry, Mohamed Nashid, the reclaimed area makes Rasmalé the largest island in the Maldives, surpassing L. Gan, which covers 609 hectares and previously held that distinction.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has previously said reclamation work is targeted at an average rate of 1.5 hectares per day. Once reclamation is completed, development is expected to proceed under the Rasmalé Master Plan, which envisages an eco-city with municipal infrastructure.
The government has said it is seeking a consultant to finalise the master plan and is preparing to open applications for housing schemes in the area.

The government had previously set April 2026 as the deadline for completing the reclamation of Rasmalé.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office in June, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the government had failed to meet the original reclamation deadline because of an increase in fuel prices.
He said the government was targeting completion by the end of 2026, estimating at the time that the remaining reclamation work could be completed within about six months.
