HRCM Calls for Investigation Into Food Poisoning at Addu Cadet Camp

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called on authorities to investigate the food poisoning incident at an Addu City Basic Cadet Camp after a number of students fell ill, with some reportedly becoming seriously ill and requiring hospitalisation.

The commission said it is currently monitoring the incident and expressed concern over the health of the students participating in the camp at Feydhoo School.

HRCM called on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident as a sensitive matter and establish and maintain oversight mechanisms to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

A Feydhoo Health Centre official told MV+ that all students treated at the centre have been discharged except for two children, who were transferred to Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH). The official said the students’ conditions are stable and improving.

The cause of the incident has not yet been established. According to the health centre official, police are collecting samples and conducting tests as part of the investigation.

Local media reports stated that 31 students in total were admitted to Maradhoo Health Centre and Feydhoo Health Centre yesterday.

The cause of the reported food poisoning and the current condition of the affected students have not yet been confirmed.
