90% of Ameenee Magu Subgrade Repairs Complete, Works Expected to Finish by November

90 per cent of subgrade repair works on the first segment of Ameenee Magu have been completed, with the remaining works and subsequent repair stages expected to conclude by November. 

The repairs, carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), are being carried out on the western end of Ameenee Magu, near the Harbour Food Court, where the road surface had deteriorated significantly. Uneven tarmac, bumps and potholes had made the section difficult and potentially hazardous for motorists.

MTCC closed the section under repair on 2 August and began physical work on the western segment shortly afterwards. The repair project involves reconstructing the damaged section after the asphalt surface deteriorated less than two years after the road was resurfaced. MTCC has said that the repair works on the segment is expected to be completed by November.

Ameenee Magu was previously resurfaced under an MVR 84.4 million contract awarded to the Road Development Corporation during the previous administration. However, sections of the tarmac later shifted and buckled unevenly, prompting fresh repairs.

Authorities have previously attributed the deterioration to problems beneath the asphalt surface, including inadequately compacted sub-base material, which allowed the road to shift under heavy traffic.

Once the remaining subgrade works are completed, MTCC will proceed with laying the aggregate base course as the next stage of repairs.
