Fayyaz Denies Reports of Leaving ‘Bodu Badhalu’ Campaign Group, Says Group Was Not Official

Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has denied reports that he left the ‘Bodu Badhalu’ campaign group due to calls for MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed to contest the MDP ticket in the 2028 presidential election, clarifying that the WhatsApp group he exited was not an official campaign group.
Fayyaz said he left a WhatsApp group named ‘Bodu Badhalu’ around three weeks ago, but stressed that the group was not officially affiliated with the campaign. He also criticised the report for not seeking his comment, saying he would have responded had he been contacted.

Addressing MDP members and others who support the ‘Bodu Badhalu’ manifesto, Fayyaz said he, Nasheed and their respective teams would continue working towards what he described as the major changes needed in the Maldives.

The clarification comes amid reports that Fayyaz had left the group following calls from MDP members and supporters for Nasheed to seek the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election.
Fayyaz and Nasheed launched the ‘Bodu Badhalu’, or ‘Big Change’, campaign in April, presenting it as a platform focused on reforms he believes are necessary for the country. The campaign has been supported by members of the MDP and has highlighted concerns over divisions within the party and the need for further political and economic reforms.
