Zakat Collections Rise 44% Year-on-Year to MVR 17.4 Million in July
Zakat on wealth, or Zakat al-Maal collections increased by 44.2 per cent year-on-year in July, with the Maldives Zakat House collecting MVR 17.37 million during the month.
According to Zakat House figures, collections reached MVR 17.4 million in July 2026, compared with MVR 12 million recorded in July 2025. The increase amounts to approximately MVR 5.33 million.

Meanwhile, MVR 2.80 million was distributed in zakat during July, with the largest share going to the Poor and Needy category.
A total of MVR 1.75 million was distributed under this category, including MVR 1.48 million in medical assistance, MVR 115,250 for basic necessities and MVR 155,950 for basic housing needs.

Zakat House noted that the figures are based on collection and expenditure records from the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises’ SAP system and may change following subsequent updates or additional postings.
The latest collection figures come as the Maldives Zakat House has reduced the Nisaab threshold for Zakat al-Mal to MVR 19,266.10, effective August 20.
The new threshold is lower than the MVR 21,836.50 Nisaab set in April, which was the highest threshold recorded in the Maldives.
Under the Maldives Zakat Act, the Nisaab for Zakat al-Mal is determined based on the price of gold and silver. Zakat House said the latest calculation used current market prices of MVR 2,179.62 per gram for gold and MVR 38.32 per gram for silver.
Zakat al-Mal becomes payable when an individual’s qualifying wealth remains at or above the Nisaab threshold for one full Hijri year. The applicable rate is 2.5 per cent of the qualifying wealth.
