The tourist was recovered from underwater and taken to Fuvahmulah Hospital, where medical staff confirmed he was deceased upon arrival, according to the police.

The authorities said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The incident comes months after a major diving accident in Vaavu Atoll in May, in which a group of Italian nationals went missing during an underwater cave expedition.

One diver was initially recovered dead, while the remaining missing divers were subsequently located during a joint search and recovery operation involving the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard, Maldives Police Service and specialist Finnish deep-diving experts deployed with support from the Italian government.

The operation also resulted in the death of MNDF diver Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee. Authorities attributed his death to decompression illness, although the exact cause had not been formally confirmed pending a post-mortem examination.
