PNC Chair Says Congress Success Shows Muizzu Will Easily Win 2028 Election

People’s National Congress (PNC) Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said the successful conclusion of the party’s congress demonstrates that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will comfortably win a second term in the 2028 presidential election.

Speaking at the event held to mark the conclusion of the PNC Congress, Abdul Raheem said the party had established its campaign structure for the 2028 election by the end of the four-day congress.

He described the congress as the most organised and successful political congress held in the Maldives to date, according to remarks reported following the event.

Abdul Raheem also described the PNC as the largest political party in the country and said no other party had organised a congress comparable to the ruling party’s gathering. He said the Maldives required leadership based on what he described as the PNC’s outlook, which he characterised as nationalistic and focused on constructive governance.

The PNC Congress was held in Malé from 15 to 18 September, with more than 1,300 delegates attending. The gathering included discussions on proposed amendments to the party’s internal regulations and elections for positions within the party’s organisational structure.

During the congress, the PNC also unanimously approved a resolution awarding President Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election. The resolution was approved by 1,119 participating members, and the ticket was formally presented to Muizzu at the closing ceremony.

Abdul Raheem has previously said that the PNC’s principal objective following the congress would be to secure Muizzu’s re-election in 2028, marking the beginning of the party’s campaign for the next presidential election.
