Environment Ministry Moves Towards EPR Model to Combat Plastic Waste

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology stated that research is currently underway to find a sustainable solution to the growing issue of plastic waste in the Maldives.

Speaking on a state media programme, Ahmed Muruthalla, Director General of Waste Management and Pollution Control, highlighted that extensive research into various operational models is being conducted to address the plastic crisis effectively. As part of these efforts, he noted that work is actively underway to establish a formal framework to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to the country.

“Once  EPR is introduced, we won’t need to ban specific sizes of plastic bottles. Instead, we will be able to set up dedicated collection centres, which should help reduce the volume of discarded bottles”, Muruthalla explained. “Naturally, implementing EPR won’t be straightforward in a country like the Maldives, which is why detailed studies are underway. We have already drafted an EPR framework to guide the process.”

EPR is a system operating in manufacturing nations where producers or distributors are held directly accountable for the lifecycle of their products. When implemented in the Maldives, this system will shift the focus away from outright bans on specific plastic bottle sizes, establishing instead a robust collection framework. 

The statement comes after the Maldives temporarily lifted its import ban on single-use plastic drinking straws, with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy citing practical difficulties associated with paper alternatives.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry, the decision is intended to provide a practical and sustainable solution to challenges faced by the public and small businesses under the existing regulations, while maintaining the government’s long-term commitment to environmental protection.
