President Muizzu Highlights Enduring Maldives-China Ties, Calls for Deeper Cooperation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and China, saying the two countries’ partnership continues to create opportunities for development and prosperity.

Speaking at an official reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival in Barceló Nasandhura yesterday, President Muizzu said bilateral relations are based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and peaceful coexistence, as well as the Maldives’ commitment to the One China Principle.

He also recalled the elevation of Maldives-China relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership following his state visit to China in 2024.

The President highlighted China’s contribution to the Maldives’ development, citing support for urban development, island infrastructure, education, technical training and institutional capacity-building.

He also referred to major projects including the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and housing developments, while noting growing opportunities for trade and economic cooperation under the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement.

Addressing global challenges, President Muizzu said conflicts and instability in different parts of the world continue to affect people, economies and global markets. He noted that Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives are particularly vulnerable to such external shocks.

He stressed the importance of dialogue, cooperation, mutual respect and trust in addressing these challenges, saying peace provides space for development, stability supports prosperity and cooperation strengthens countries’ ability to overcome difficulties.

President Muizzu said the Maldives is interested in expanding cooperation with China, including through China’s four global initiatives, while further aligning bilateral cooperation with the Maldives’ national development priorities.

The President concluded by extending congratulations and good wishes to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people, and expressed hope for China’s continued prosperity.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Cabinet ministers, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, and senior Maldivian and Chinese officials attended the reception.
