Police to Impound Dangerous Drivers’ Vehicles for 30 Days, Pursue Repeat Offenders

The Maldives Police Service will impound vehicles involved in dangerous driving for 30 days and pursue criminal investigations against repeat offenders as part of new special operations targeting motorists who endanger or frighten other road users.

Police said dangerous drivers will be identified and profiled, while repeat offenders will face criminal investigations without prior warning. Action will also be taken against vehicle owners, while details of repeat offenders may be made public.

Vehicles that remain unclaimed after the 30-day period will be disposed of according to established procedures.

The operations target behaviours including:

  • Zigzag driving that endangers or frightens other road users
  • Modifying vehicles to produce excessively loud exhaust noise
  • Riding in a manner that causes footrests to scrape against the road
  • Speeding over speed breakers without slowing down
  • Unauthorised street racing and stunt driving
  • Dangerous overtaking
  • Driving under the influence
  • Failing to stop or attempting to flee when directed by police

Police said action will also be taken against vehicle owners, in addition to drivers. Vehicles involved in dangerous driving may be impounded for 30 days, while unclaimed vehicles will be disposed of according to established procedures.

The police also said it has identified employees of government institutions and state-owned companies among those involved in dangerous driving and will share information with their employers for possible administrative action.

Details of repeat offenders will also be made public, according to police.

Police said information, photographs and videos submitted by members of the public will be verified before legal action is taken.
