Physical work officially commenced yesterday on an MVR 18.98 million project to construct six finger jetties at the Northern harbour area, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announced.

The scope of the project includes building three jetties measuring 25 meters long by 6 meters wide, alongside three jetties measuring 15 meters long by 6 meters wide.

Once completed, the new infrastructure is expected to significantly ease harbour congestion by expanding available space and allowing multiple vessels to berth simultaneously.

According to MTCC, the jetties will streamline travel and enhance safety for commuters, eliminating the need for passengers, particularly children, senior citizens, and travellers with luggage, to cross adjacent speedboats to board outer vessels.

The jetty project forms a critical component of the broader, phased overhaul of Boduthakurufaanu Magu and the Northern harbour area.

To facilitate the commencement of works, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure previously instructed vessel owners to clear all craft berthed between the Fishermen’s Park area and Naadhee Goalhi by 11:00 PM last Friday, cautioning that any remaining vessels would be removed by the authority.
