First of 20 Tree Nurseries Opens in S. Meedhoo Under Five Million Trees Project
The nursery covers 23,000 square feet of land, according to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
The first of 20 planned tree nurseries across the Maldives has opened in S. Meedhoo under the government’s five million tree-planting programme, with 2.4 million trees planted nationwide so far.
The nursery, developed with funding from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, covers 23,000 square feet of land. The government said it would improve access to plants for Meedhoo and neighbouring islands, supporting the programme’s expansion across the atolls.
According to the Ministry, work on the remaining 19 nurseries is progressing, with the aim of completing them as soon as possible. The nurseries are also expected to create potential revenue opportunities for island councils through plant sales.
Once the planned facilities are completed, the Maldives will have 21 nurseries under the initiative, including a 55,000-square-foot nursery being developed in Hulhumalé with assistance from the Chinese government. That facility is expected to open within the coming year.
The five million tree-planting programme is a presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at expanding green spaces and strengthening the country’s response to climate change. The government has set a target of planting five million trees over five years.
