Preliminary inquiries suggest that a high-speed collision on the Sinamalé Bridge highway today was an intentional act designed to intimidate law enforcement officers and disrupt an ongoing traffic operation, according to a statement released by the Commissioner of Police and the Maldives Police Service.

The incident occurred at approximately 04:29 along the highway lanes leading from Malé to Hulhumalé, where officers had established a vehicle checkpoint under a special national operation targeting dangerous and reckless driving.

Police reported that the motorcycle approached the checkpoint at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, drove directly towards officers stationed on the highway, crashed through a police barricade, and struck a duty officer.

The Commissioner’s statement noted that three additional motorcycles were present at the scene during the event.

Authorities confirmed that the motorcycle involved in the collision has been impounded, and both the rider and passenger were taken into police custody.

A second motorcycle and two additional individuals linked to the incident have also been located and detained.

In the statement, the Commissioner of Police declared that physical or psychological intimidation directed at officers would not deter law enforcement from carrying out its statutory duties to maintain public safety.

The service affirmed that the special operation against dangerous driving will continue without interruption, warning that legal measures against individuals attempting to disrupt police operations will be strictly enforced to the fullest extent of the law.
