The Chinese government officially presented 880 solar streetlights to the Maldives during a formal handover ceremony in Malé today, supporting the nation’s push toward renewable energy.
The official donation agreement under the “China Solar Lights Maldives” project was signed by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, on behalf of the Maldivian government and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua on behalf of China.
The initiative aims to bolster the Maldivian government’s ongoing effort to expand renewable energy consumption across the islands. Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Kong noted that the donation stems from agreements reached during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official meeting with Chinese leadership last year, reaffirming China’s continued support for the Maldives as a close partner.
Ambassador Kong expressed optimism that the streetlights would positively impact local communities. While previous Chinese solar streetlight donations were installed across three islands, this latest batch will expand coverage to additional islands, contributing directly to the country’s clean energy transition.
The administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set a target to generate 33 per cent of the country’s energy from renewable sources by 2028. According to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, renewable energy capacity in the Maldives has already reached 116 megawatts through ongoing regional projects.
The Chinese Government has officially handed over 880 solar-powered streetlights to the Maldives under grant aid as part of the "China Solar Lights Maldives" project. The agreement was signed today by Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua, reinforcing our commitment to clean energy and sustainable island development. @China_Amb_Mdv @ChinaEmbassy_MV #MaldivesChina #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #SustainableDevelopment #Maldives2040Vision— Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Dev.
