Wave Monitoring System Installed Near Thulhaadhoo Under Climate Resilience Project
A Spotter wave observation system was installed at FAD number F08D03.
A Spotter wave observation system has been installed near B. Thulhaadhoo to collect data on wave and ocean conditions as part of the Green Climate Fund’s (GCF) Building Climate Resilient Safer Islands in the Maldives (BCRSIM) project.
The monitoring system was installed at fish aggregating device (FAD) F08D03 near Thulhaadhoo to support the collection of oceanographic data and improve understanding of changes in the Maldives’ marine environment.
The system is expected to provide information on wave conditions that can support coastal management, climate adaptation planning and assessments of environmental changes affecting the country’s islands.

According to the GCF, the BCRSIM project aims to strengthen coastal resilience by improving the management of natural coastal protection systems, including sandy beaches and coral reefs.
The project focuses on integrated coastal zone management, early warning and early action systems, and knowledge sharing to help island communities respond to climate-related risks.
The GCF said the project will introduce an adaptive beach protection approach on public land in the Maldives for the first time, incorporating natural coastal processes into measures designed to protect vulnerable shorelines.
The project has secured USD 25.1 million (approximately MVR 387 million) in GCF financing, alongside USD 40.9 million (approximately MVR 631 million) in co-financing. Together, the funding amounts to approximately USD 66 million (MVR 1.02 billion).
The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to monitor coastal conditions and address the impacts of climate change, particularly coastal erosion and increasing exposure to extreme weather and ocean conditions.
