Shaviyani Atoll Hospital has issued a public health warning to residents of Shaviyani Funadhoo, advising them against collecting rainwater or exposing themselves to the current rainfall due to potential chemical contamination from the recent petrol shed fire.

According to hospital authorities, the extensive blaze released dense smoke, soot, and fuel particles into the atmosphere, raising significant risks that hazardous and toxic chemical substances may have mixed with the falling rain.

To safeguard personal health and prevent chemical-related exposure, the hospital urged all residents to refrain entirely from harvesting or drinking rainwater during this period. Members of the public were also strongly advised to stay indoors, take necessary protective precautions, and avoid getting wet in the rain until atmospheric conditions normalise.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also arranged five days of emergency shelter and food relief for 11 residents displaced after a massive fire broke out at a petrol shed in Shaviyani Funadhoo yesterday.

The blaze rapidly spread from the fuel station to neighbouring properties, destroying a residential home, a motorcycle and engine repair garage, a warehouse, and a vehicle parking garage.
