The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has shut down four establishments in Hulhumalé during an inspection operation launched to determine whether food service outlets comply with statutory safety standards and to identify unlicensed operators.
In a social media statement, the MFDA said the joint operation conducted with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) aimed to assess compliance with standards set out under the Food Safety Act and to detect venues operating without permits. The MFDA did not disclose the identities of the shuttered premises.
As part of expanding food premises inspections, the authority has also decided to begin home visits next month to inspect residences that produce food commercially.
The MFDA stated that surveillance inspections will be carried out to monitor registered commercial food producers and assess whether food preparation complies with prescribed guidelines.
According to the MFDA, the residential inspections will run from the 5th to the 20th of next month, during which authorized inspectors will visit home kitchens registered as commercial food preparation sites.
The authority added that further details can be obtained via its hotline.
