Former Maldives President Abdullah Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence at Maafushi jail, was denied the opportunity to meet with his lawyers today. This decision was made by Correctional Service officials after Yameen’s legal team refused to present a file they had brought with them.
PPM spokesperson Heena Waleed informed local media that the lawyers had been scheduled to meet with Yameen today. However, the meeting was obstructed when the lawyers arrived at Maafushi jail.
The PPM alleges that Home Minister Imran Abdullah was behind the decision to prevent the meeting from taking place. Heena expressed condemnation towards Imran for hindering the meeting and not allowing Yameen’s lawyers to see him.
Correctional Services tweeted today, defending their decisions. The tweet read that the lawyers were denied access to their client after they refused to show a file brought with them, which is a routine procedure.
PPM has been attempting to submit Yameen’s candidacy form for the upcoming presidential election, despite the lawyers’ inability to enter the jail. They have expressed their determination to proceed with the submission despite Yameen’s ongoing incarceration.
PPM is actively working on submitting Yameen’s candidacy form and has also filed a case in the Supreme Court to ensure his electoral rights are upheld. Yameen’s opportunity to contest the election has been jeopardised due to his ongoing prison sentence.
The window for filing presidential election candidacies is open from today until the 7th of next month.
