The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has made the decision not to enter into a coalition with the ruling main party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), during the initial round of the presidential election.

The MRM, which was founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and is currently part of the coalition government, has been invited to continue the coalition for a second term. However, at present, the MRM has not responded to this invitation.

In an official statement, the MRM revealed that they had engaged in both informal and written discussions with the MDP concerning cooperation in the elections. During these discussions, the MRM made clear its support for certain policies. However, due to not fully aligning with the proposals put forth by the MDP, the MRM has opted against working together. The MDP has been duly informed of this decision.

The MRM’s attempts to nominate a candidate for the presidential election have encountered legal obstacles. The Election Commission of Maldives (EMC), citing the failure to meet the legally required 3,000 members, decided to dissolve the MRM. The party challenged this decision by filing a civil suit, alleging its illegality.

Nevertheless, the ECM’s motion to review the decision ruled in favor of the commission. Despite this, the MRM has chosen not to participate in any ECM meetings related to the presidential election.

The current coalition government comprises the MRM, the Jumhooree Party (JP), and Adhalath. Among these three parties, only the Adhalath Party has formed a coalition for a second term at this point.
