The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has extended the deadline until tomorrow for online re-registration of individuals voting from an island other than their own for the upcoming presidential election.

Initially, citizens were given until midnight yesterday to take advantage of this opportunity. However, the deadline has now been pushed forward, providing eligible voters with additional time to re-register, with the new cutoff set for tomorrow.

ECM has introduced two re-registration options – an online platform and the submission of paper forms. This step aims to simplify the re-registration process and enhance accessibility for the general public.

It is worth noting that individuals who have already re-registered for the last local council elections need not repeat the process for the presidential election. This provision has been implemented to streamline voting procedures and eliminate unnecessary redundancies.

For those opting for paper re-registration, the deadline remains fixed on Sunday, August 5th.

The ECM plans to publish the information of re-registered candidates on their official website and share the data with political parties. In view of this extension, the commission appeals to citizens not to procrastinate and urges them to complete the re-registration process promptly.
