This vital step is being taken to uphold democratic principles and to maintain an environment of fairness, transparency, and integrity during the electoral process, the Commission wrote in their statement today.
Guided by the General Act on Elections (Act No. 11/2008), the framework for the 2023 presidential election underscores the importance of a free, fair, and transparent election with active public participation.
The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) is closely monitoring the preparations and various activities pertaining to the forthcoming election. The election observation process will be structured into three distinct phases. This entails the identification of pre-election events, monitoring the proceedings on the polling day itself, and observing post-election developments.
During these phases, the HRCM is engaging with pertinent authorities in connection with the election, engaging in dialogue about the potential challenges, and addressing the necessary arrangements.
Beyond its role in monitoring election-related matters, the ECM is also actively engaged in initiatives aimed at raising voter awareness. Collaboration with the National Advisory Committee on Elections Human augments the Commission’s efforts in advising on electoral concerns from a human rights standpoint.
In order to gauge the prevailing environment for a genuinely free and fair election, the HRCM is embarking on pre-election visits. These visits encompass meetings with a range of local institutions, as well as interactions with the public to gather election-related information.
The focus remains on ensuring that the environment for the 2023 presidential election remains devoid of undue influence and adheres firmly to the legal framework.
Emphasising the significance of their mission, the HRCM called upon all relevant agencies to collaborate closely. By working together, they aim to guarantee the integrity and impartiality of the upcoming presidential election.
