UNICEF Maldives is urging young people across the country to participate in its newly launched Youth Reference Group (YRG), with the application expiring on August 12, 2023.

This initiative aims to bridge the gap between UNICEF and the youth, ensuring their voices are heard in the development of UNICEF-supported programs.

The YRG will serve as a platform for young individuals aged 16 to 25 to engage directly with UNICEF, sharing their perspectives, knowledge, and experiences to shape programs that are relevant and effective for them.

The group’s objectives include amplifying youth voices, enhancing accountability, and building young people’s skills in leadership, communication, advocacy, and community engagement.

UNICEF envisions the YRG as a means to facilitate transparent and ethical participation. It is committed to principles such as transparency, voluntarism, respect, relevance, inclusivity, and accountability as outlined in the General Comment No.12 by the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

The group will actively contribute to UNICEF’s program design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation processes. Additionally, they will engage in advocacy efforts, partnership building, and direct consultations with other young people to identify emerging issues.

UNICEF Maldives Country Office (MCO) will provide support and guidance to the YRG through regular communication and meetings. The group will produce bi-annual reports on its activities and progress, ensuring transparency and accountability.

This initiative aligns with UNICEF’s commitment to empowering young individuals and ensuring their active involvement in shaping policies and programs that impact their lives. The Youth Reference Group offers an opportunity for Maldivian youth to have their voices heard and contribute to meaningful change in their communities.
