Transparency Maldives issued a call to all involved in the upcoming presidential elections to uphold the principles of accountability and fairness, in a tweet yesterday.

As the official campaign period gains momentum, the organisation has urged candidates, political parties, and supporters to demonstrate a sense of responsibility that befits the democratic process.

Transparency Maldives has specifically stressed the necessity of avoiding any actions that might compromise candidates’ electoral rights.

The organisation has directed its plea towards individuals in positions of political influence. It has called upon them to prevent the misuse of state resources and state-owned enterprises to sway the electoral landscape.

Among the concerns raised are the announcement of projects and job openings, as well as the deployment of state assets and influence for campaign purposes.

A study by IFES in 2014 concluded that 37% of Maldivians were personally offered or witnessed money being given out for votes. Another study concluded one out of every three Maldivians has participated in the selling of votes or witnessed it.

Transparency Maldives has extended its call to encompass state institutions, urging them to act responsibly and ensure an environment where voters can confidently exercise their rights without the spectre of violence or intimidation.
