President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has made a commitment to reclaim land and construct 100 housing units in Villingili, situated in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
During a campaign event held in Villingili, President Solih presented his vision for the island’s development over the forthcoming five years. Among his proposals is the initiation of a fresh land reclamation initiative, aimed at facilitating increased economic activities.
He also outlined his intention to designate a nearby uninhabited island as a picnic destination and expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with local inhabitants regarding the potential construction of a bridge linking Villingili and Kooddoo.
Moreover, President Solih articulated his supplementary strategies for the enhancement of Villingili’s infrastructure, which he intends to deliberate with the island’s residents. Acknowledging Villingili’s significance as a fishing hub, he underscored the necessity for improved fish storage facilities and expedited payment processes.
In view of this, he pledged to augment the island’s fish storage capacity by the middle of 2024 and establish mechanisms for prompt payment.
Additionally, President Solih highlighted the prospect of augmented remuneration for fishermen upon the United Kingdom (UK) effecting a reduction in import duties on Maldivian fish products.
He also disclosed that discussions have transpired between the Maldives and the World Bank regarding fisheries initiatives, with the World Bank pledging USD 54 million to invigorate the fisheries sector within the atolls. This financial injection is earmarked not only for this purpose but also for the establishment of two fish canning factories.
