Ali Azim, the Parliamentary Group Leader of The Democrats, conveyed concerns today regarding the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and their purported efforts to obstruct the newly elected government led by Mohamed Muizzu.

During the press conference, Azim emphasised that the MDP’s actions seem geared towards impeding the formation of the President-elect’s government.

He cited instances of what he claims are deliberate attempts to stall parliamentary proceedings, notably to hinder the inauguration of Dr. Muizzu and the tabling of the 2024 budget in the coming days.

Azim expressed his frustration, noting that such actions could impede the incoming government’s functioning without the budget being passed.

Azim highlighted his prior appeals to the MDP, urging them not to create barriers and contesting the MDP’s assertion that no other parliamentary matters could proceed without addressing the no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

He criticised the MDP for allegedly impeding the government transition directly, describing their actions as provocations towards the incoming administration.

Furthermore, Azim addressed the no-confidence motion against President Nasheed, claiming it was initiated following an agreement between the MDP and the Democrats.

He expressed doubt about the necessity of revisiting this case and labelled the MDP’s actions as a breach of the agreement.
