The Magistrate Court issued a ruling today, imposing a fine of MVR 10,000 on the Prosecutor General’s Office for an instance of contempt of court.

Following the PG Office’s failure to comply with the court’s directive to divulge specific information linked to a criminal case, the Seenu Atoll Feydhoo Magistrate’s Court took action.

The state entity did not adhere to prior rulings issued by the High Court and the Supreme Court, both of which mandated the disclosure of this information.

According to the court, the prosecution neglected to disclose the information as mandated in an order from April the previous year. Despite multiple attempts to ensure compliance, the order remained unfulfilled, resulting in a determination of contempt of court.

Consequently, the Prosecutor General’s Office received a fine of MVR 10,000 due to this non-compliance.

The court has stipulated that the fine must be remitted to the court within a month.

Furthermore, the court instructed the disclosure of criminal and arrest records pertaining to state witnesses. Although the crime records had been previously revealed, the state has yet to disclose the arrest records.

This marks the first instance where the Prosecutor General’s Office has faced charges of contempt of court.
