Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and President-Elect, has requested members of the PNC to avoid diverting members from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) while aiming to augment the PNC’s membership.
The appeal arose within a WhatsApp group comprising PPM/PNC senate members.
Muizzu’s response came in reaction to a member sharing an article featuring comments from former President Abdulla Yameen regarding the ongoing membership drive.
Abdulla Yameen, currently under house arrest after being granted permission to attend essential functions, voiced apprehension at a PPM meeting, noting concerns that PPM members were submitting membership forms for the PNC.
He urged members to refrain from this practice.
Within the same WhatsApp group, Muizzu reiterated the need to expand PNC membership by 10,000 individuals. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that the membership drive does not involve recruiting members already aligned with the PPM.
While several members expressed support for Muizzu’s stance, Yameen did not respond in any form.
Muizzu is actively pursuing the objective of increasing PNC membership by 10,000 within the next three months.
His broader aspiration involves fostering collaboration between the PPM and PNC to secure a majority in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. Yameen, addressing PPM members on Monday night, similarly appealed for joint efforts between PPM and PNC in the upcoming elections.
