In a statement released yesterday, the PPM-PNC coalition disclosed that the application process for those interested in contesting the primary will be open from December 20 to December 31. Emphasising unity, the two associated parties will present candidates jointly as a cohesive coalition, as per the statement.
The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) is anticipated to declare the date for the parliamentary elections on November 5. The ECM foresees the elections being held in late March or early April of the following year.
The impending election seeks to appoint 93 members to constitute the subsequent Parliament, signifying a rise from the current 87-member composition.
Speculation had been rife about the separate participation of the PPM and PNC in the election. However, the recent joint declaration by the PPM-PNC for the parliamentary elections dispels earlier rumours.
Under the leadership of President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the PNC has been actively engaging in efforts to bolster its membership, attracting some former PPM members to join its ranks.
Nonetheless, party president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom expressed discontent, asserting that party members need not shift to the PNC, citing a shared ideological underpinning between the two parties.
