Makunudhoo Land Reclamation Work Resumes Following Temporary Halt
Dredging operations in Makunudhoo have recommenced following a suspension prompted by a welding cylinder explosion in the island on the 22nd of the preceding month.
The resumption took place approximately 12 days after the unfortunate incident.
Employees associated with the dredging, particularly those from the Big Fish Company, underwent counseling before the operations resumed. Notably, around 20% of the earmarked area for the airport has been dredged thus far.
Initiated in September of the previous year, the dredging project aims to reclaim 43.12 hectares of land for the development of the Makondu airport. A 3493-meter rivetment will be installed to safeguard the dredged area, with plans to construct a 1500-meter runway at the airport.
The project, valued at $16 million, was awarded to the concerned company within the span of a year.
This initiative aligns with the government’s strategic policy to enhance connectivity across the Maldives by addressing transportation challenges and fostering developmental opportunities.
Airport development is a pivotal aspect of this strategy, with various airports being established from the northern to the southern regions, while efforts to connect islands through the national ferry system are underway.
