President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is committed to enhancing the financial independence of sports associations and reducing their dependence on government funding to promote a more self-sustaining sports environment, as stated by PNC Vice President Mohamed Hussain Shareef.

Addressing the issue during PSM programme, Shareef articulated the new government’s collaborative approach in formulating sports policies after consulting with various stakeholders within the sports sector.

One key concern highlighted was the prevalent dependency of the majority of clubs on government financial aid, resulting in a limited number of self-sustaining clubs across the Maldives.

Shareef shed light on the status of players in Maldives, noting that many engaged in national and international levels aren’t professional athletes. He pointed out the prevalence of semi-professional players in the country, comparing the situation to players in the Maldives who often juggle additional jobs alongside their sporting commitments due to the inability to sustain themselves solely through sports.

Under Muizzu’s sports policy, a commitment to augment the salaries of national athletes and institute a special incentive scheme has been highlighted.

This initiative aims to create a system to evaluate and reward the national service of athletes in a sustainable manner. Additionally, a structured system will be introduced to facilitate athletes’ training and provision of necessary treatment in the event of injury.
