MVR 19.7 Million Earmarked for Former Presidents’ Allowances

In the upcoming budget for 2024, the Finance Ministry of Maldives has designated an allocation of MVR 19.7 million specifically for the allowances of former presidents.

This is part of a broader proposal encompassing a total budget of MVR 49.5 billion for the coming year.

Notably, the budget comprises provisions for allowances granted to five former presidents, with a significant portion assigned to the operational costs of their respective offices. 

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is slated to receive the largest allowance, set at MVR 900,000 in cash for the upcoming year. Conversely, former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has abstained from receiving cash allowances.

Breakdown of Allowances for Former Presidents:

Cash Allowances:

  • Total: MVR 2.7 million.
  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom: MVR 900,000 per annum.
  • Mohamed Nasheed: MVR 600,000 per annum.
  • Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom: MVR 600,000 per annum.
  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: MVR 600,000 per annum.

Living Allowances:

  • Total: MVR 3 million.
  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom: MVR 900,000 per annum.
  • Mohamed Nasheed: MVR 600,000 per annum.
  • Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik: MVR 600,000 per annum.
  • Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom: MVR 600,000 per annum.
  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: MVR 600,000 per annum.

Office Operational Allowances:

  • Total: MVR 10.5 million.
  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom: MVR 2.1 million per annum.
  • Mohamed Nasheed: MVR 2.1 million per annum.
  • Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik: MVR 2.1 million per annum.
  • Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom: MVR 2.1 million per annum.
  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: MVR 2.1 million per annum.

Medical Allowances:

  • Total: MVR 3.5 million.
  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom: MVR 700,000 per annum.
  • Mohamed Nasheed: MVR 700,000 per annum.
  • Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom: MVR 700,000 per annum.
  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: MVR 700,000 per annum.
  • Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik: MVR 700,000 per annum.

Yearly Allowances for Each Former President:

  • Maumoon Abdul Gayoom: MVR 4.3 million per annum.
  • Mohamed Nasheed: MVR 4 million per annum.
  • Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik: MVR 3.4 million per annum.
  • Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom: MVR 4 million per annum.
  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih: MVR 4 million per annum.

Comparatively, the 2023 budget allocated MVR 10.4 million for the allowances of former presidents, signifying an increase in the proposed allowances for the upcoming fiscal year.

These financial provisions for former presidents in the Maldives are guided by the Protection and Privileges of Former Presidents Act.
