Male’ City Council has initiated a platform for lodging complaints regarding the allocation of parking spaces, addressing concerns raised by citizens.

The City Council announced the commencement of a complaint submission period regarding the leasing of parking spots for four-wheelers. Individuals with grievances regarding the parking lease arrangements are encouraged to submit their complaints to the Council starting today until the 5th of February.

The City Council clarified that complaints may include instances where individuals failed to follow up after being assigned a parking slot, cases where recipients neglected to sign the agreement despite being informed of their allocation, as well as other related issues, as outlined in the announcement.

Furthermore, Male’ City Council outlined the avenues through which complaints can be lodged, including the utilisation of a dedicated complaint portal on their official website or via traditional mail addressed to the general services section of the Council.

This move comes following the previous allocation of parking spaces by the Male’ City Council in February 2022, which saw taxis, private cars, and company vehicles charged MVR 650, MVR 1,500, and MVR 3,000 per month, respectively, for the use of parking facilities.

Parking slots were leased out for a maximum duration of one year, with applications accepted from various locations. However, concerns arose during the allocation process, with a significant number of slots reportedly allocated from areas predominantly used for motorcycle parking, prompting public scrutiny and allegations of irregularities in the allocation process.

Adam Azim, the current Mayor of Male’ City, had pledged during the by-election campaign to address these concerns and facilitate a mechanism for lodging complaints. He has expressed commitment to investigating the allegations levelled against the Male’ City Council, reaffirming his dedication to transparency and accountability in local governance.
