Attorney General Ahmed Usham revealed today that the Compensation Settlement Committee, established by the previous Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) government, had disbursed MVR 1 billion in compensation to ten individuals.

The committee, created by the former government to address disputes between the government and the private sector, operated under specific regulations.

In a press conference held at the Attorney General’s Office, Usham disclosed that the committee had decided to provide both monetary compensation and uninhabited islands to the aforementioned individuals.

Delving into the specifics, Usham highlighted that the committee’s decisions encompassed settlements valued at over MVR 1 billion in assets and cash disbursed to various parties. He stated, “We are currently reviewing the decisions made by the settlement committee of the previous government.”

Moreover, Usham outlined the complexities surrounding these settlements, noting instances where the Auditor General’s Office had recommended specific actions or fixed monetary amounts. To comprehensively examine the cases, the Attorney General’s Office intends to engage a dedicated team for thorough scrutiny.

As such, Usham announced directives to the Finance Ministry and the Tourism Ministry, urging the suspension of decisions made by the previous government’s settlement committee. This halt, he clarified, would persist until further notice, emphasising the need for a meticulous review process.

The Attorney General specifically underscored concerns related to the Tourism Ministry’s involvement, particularly in granting uninhabited islands for the operation of tourist resorts. He affirmed that an assessment by the Auditor General had been solicited to ascertain the fairness of the compensation disbursed by the former government.

As the investigation continues, Usham assured transparency in the handling of the ten identified cases, but the details remain confidential.
