President Engages with Guraidhoo, Maafushi Island Councils to Address Developmental Challenges
In two separate meetings held on Thursday, President Muizzu met with the Island Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of K. Maafushi, as well as the counterparts from Guraidhoo Island, where they discussed developmental challenges including transportation, infrastructure, and healthcare.
The meeting with the K. Maafushi Island Council and WDC, held at the Secretariat of the Maafushi Council, centred on a range of pressing issues affecting the island’s development. The Council underscored the urgent need for road construction, improvements to hospital services, and expansion of the harbour facilities.
Other concerns raised included strengthening fire and rescue services at Maafushi Prison, upgrading the sewerage system, expediting the construction of a school annex building, installing a dollar ATM service, and establishing a mosque on reclaimed land.
The WDC of Maafushi echoed these concerns and highlighted challenges stemming from insufficient allowances for the committee, along with pressing waste management issues.
While President Dr Muizzu reassured prompt action in addressing the concerns brought forward by both the Council and the WDC, cabinet Ministers and senior government officials present at the meeting provided updates on the status of various initiatives aimed at resolving these issues, according to a press release published by the President’s Office.
Meanwhile, in a parallel meeting with the Guraidhoo Island Council and WDC members, held at the Secretariat of the Guraidhoo Island Council, similar concerns and developmental needs were discussed.
Council members stressed the necessity for land reclamation to meet residents’ demands, while also highlighting challenges arising from previous methods of reclamation. They advocated for single-session schooling, redevelopment of the sewerage network, construction of a new police building, and enhancements to the island’s harbour facilities. Additionally, they sought upgrades to the local health centre to elevate it to hospital status with the completion of a new building.
The WDC members of Guraidhoo expressed their interest in exploring additional income sources for the committee.
The President’s Office reveals that President Muizzu provided insights into the land reclamation project and discussed potential solutions to the challenges raised.
