Akuru Type has revealed that a considerable number of its fonts are being illicitly reproduced and reused without due compensation, in a statement published yesterday on the social media platform X.

The primary perpetrators of this infringement are reportedly aspiring parliamentary candidates campaigning for the upcoming elections.

Despite direct outreach efforts, only a fraction of those approached have rectified the issue by either removing the fonts or opting for premium purchases.

Approximately 90% of the infringers remain uncooperative, according to Akuru Type.

The company notes that this wave of unethical behaviour poses a substantial hurdle for Akuru Type as it endeavours to establish a fully functional contributor platform.

With numerous type foundries and individuals eagerly anticipating inclusion in the marketplace, the statement highlights that such misconduct not only dampens the spirits of talented contributors but also threatens the sustainability of innovative platforms like Akuru Type.

In a plea for ethical conduct, Akuru Type urged all stakeholders to recognise and value the painstaking efforts of its contributors.

Emphasising that the fonts showcased on the platform represent months and years of dedicated work which reflect the cultural richness of the Maldives, the platform fervently hopes that notable candidates will either desist from misusing creative works or, at the very least, extend acknowledgment and support to the creators through legitimate purchases.

Despite the disheartening situation, Akuru Type did highlight some positive milestones. Within the first fortnight of its launch, the platform garnered 3000 downloads, including 10 premium font purchases. Notably, ‘Veli’ emerged as the most sought-after choice among users.
